Private Services
and Fees

Timeframe of Services
Expect forms to take around 4 weeks for your GP to complete and return. Completing paperwork pulls GPs away from patient care; many work up to 70 hours a week, and paperwork is consuming more of their time. Consequently, many GPs find themselves taking work home on evenings and weekends to manage their heavy workload.
Information about Fees
The National Health Service (NHS) typically provides healthcare free of charge, but there are exceptions, like prescription charges and fees for certain services.
General Practitioners (GPs) are self-employed and cover their costs for non-NHS work through fees. GPs have contracts with the government for NHS services but increasingly undertake non-medical tasks, often due to their community trust.
The British Medical Association (BMA) suggests fees for non-NHS work as guidelines, though GPs aren’t bound by them. Patients should be informed of charges beforehand, with many GPs basing their fees on BMA’s suggestions.
